What can community do?
So as a community how can we help business?
We could just adopt one of those businesses during the time that they have to stay closed. If a community of 500 people would give a dollar each every week it would most likely cover some of the rental cost for a small business and give them the opportunity to stay in business.
Obviously if businesses are open in our community it's important to keep them in business by actually buying something there.
What about unemployment?
Generally this will mean that people have less money than they had before. Helping out with grocery costs by providing produce from your own garden or a home cooked meal or home cooked bread are ways of showing support. It's also possible to have an initiative in your own neighbourhood where everybody when they buy their groceries buy two items off a grocery list of someone that is experiencing financial difficulty. These items can just appear on the doorstep. Imagine how it would help and how it would make them feel that so many people would want to help them. And that way they would find lots on their doorstep.
Then there is a possibility also of giving people some employment if they're willing to do jobs around your house or around the house of others in the community. Obviously payment could be a good thing but feeling that you have purpose in your day and helping each-other can also be away to help the unemployed and build a much stronger community.
Or helping the elderly with no computer skills address online applications like centre link or my age care etc. or Tutoring, or skill sharing in your own neighbourhood.
There is also the possibility for using Timebanking and similar programs in your country is a community program that allows the voluntary exchange of services between members.
Again there is also the possibility of actually financially helping people that are unable to meet their rental or mortgage demands because of unemployment. Just a small amount of money from many people can actually make the difference between someone being evicted and homeless or someone being able to stay in their house.
It's when communities help each other in these ways, and there are many more ways of doing this, we can again feel safe. We can again feel that we are not alone even if we are social-distancing. Even if we're in lockdown, communicating with each other and supporting each other makes us feel someone has our back and will help when we need it.
